Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-10-11
Waqf is published by PalVision in partnership with the Applied Research Institute – Jerusalem (ARIJ) and the Arab Studies Society. This policy covers the Waqf mobile app and this website.
Your account
The map is open to people who have an approved account. When you request one we keep:
- Your name and email address
- Your phone number and organization, if you give them
- Your password, stored only in a scrambled (hashed) form that cannot be read back
- The language you registered in, when you accepted these terms, and whether and when your request was approved
We use these details only to decide who may use the map, and to email you about your account: that your request was approved or not, and password-reset links you ask for. They are seen by the project's administrators and by no one else, and are kept on the project's server for as long as the account exists.
You can delete your account at any time from Settings in the app, from the account menu on the website, or by writing to the address at the end of this page. Deleting it removes these details from our server straight away. The page "Delete your account" gives the steps.
What we do not collect
We do not collect your contacts, device identifiers, advertising identifiers, or your device's location.
We use no analytics, advertising or tracking services of any kind, and we share no data with third parties for advertising or data-broker purposes.
What you choose to send us
If you use the "add a property" feature, what you enter is sent to our research server so the project team can review it:
- The property name, endower, use, and year
- Your notes about the property
- The location or outline you mark on the map
- Any photograph you attach
This information describes a building, not you. Please do not put personal information about yourself or anyone else in the free-text fields. Submitted records may be published as part of the project's public documentation of Waqf properties. When you are signed in, the submission is linked to your account's email address so the team can contact you about it; that address is never published.
Camera and photo library
The app asks for camera or photo-library access only when you attach a photo to a submission, and uses it for nothing else. You can decline; every other feature keeps working.
Stored on your device
Your language preference and similar settings are kept on your device only, and are removed when you delete the app. On this website the same choice is kept in your browser's local storage.
When you sign in, a sign-in token keeps you signed in for up to 90 days. In the app it is kept in your device's secure storage; on this website it is a cookie named waqfa_token, which only our server can read and which is used for nothing but signing you in. Signing out deletes it. It is the only cookie the site sets, and it is strictly necessary, so there is no cookie banner.
Map imagery
Satellite imagery is supplied by Esri and is loaded from their servers when you view the map, which means your request reaches Esri as any web request would.
The typefaces and the mapping library of the map are loaded from Google Fonts and unpkg, which likewise receive your request. The app loads its typefaces from Google Fonts in the same way.
Children
The app is suitable for all ages and does not knowingly collect information from children.
